Este retrato prematura de Vernet, un importante pintor de batalla del siglo XIX, se cree que representa a uno de los cientos de Oriente Medio que buscaron refugio en Francia tras la infructuoso invasión de Egipto de Napoleón en 1798–1801. El nombre del sitter es desconocido, pero es identificable por sus prendas como miembro del cuerpo de Mamluks, reclutado por Napoleón como parte del ejército francés. Sus filas fueron posteriormente llenadas por franceses nativos; elementos de su vestido permeaban la moda civil.
