Diese Szene des Alten Testaments zeigt einen Engel am Himmel, der Feuer und Schwefel auf Sodom niedertreibt, um die Stadt für ihre Bosheit zu zerstören. Links führt ein anderer Engel Lot und seine beiden Töchter zur Sicherheit. Hinter ihnen, Lots Frau, die trotz einer Warnung in Bedauern zurückblickte, ist eine Säule des Salzes geworden. Jahre nachdem Corot das Gemälde auf dem Pariser Salon von 1844 ausgestellt hatte, schnitt er es deutlich ab und reduzierte den Himmel und die Landschaft rechts. Er hat den Vordergrund in einer dunkleren Palette neu bemalt und die überarbeitete Leinwand auf dem Salon 1857 ausgestellt. Bis dahin sorgte seine Statur für einen besseren Empfang der Kritiker.
