Während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges machte die US-Kriegschaft Kearsarge Schlagzeilen, nachdem sie die Konföderierte Raider Alabama vor der Küste Frankreichs versenkt hatte. Manet bezeugte nicht zuerst die weitverbreitete Veranstaltung, sondern widmete zwei Gemälde dem Thema: eine Szene der Marineschlacht (Philadelphia Museum of Art) und dieses Bild, ausgelöst durch seinen späteren Besuch des siegreichen Schiffes am Anker bei Boulogne. Sie waren seine ersten Darstellungen einer aktuellen Veranstaltung.
