Rembrandt hatte ein großes Studio mit vielen Schülern, die seinen Stil und sogar seine Unterschrift emulierten. Infolgedessen setzt die heftige Debatte über die Urheberschaft seiner Gemälde heute fort. Diese Arbeit wurde universell Rembrandt zugeschrieben, bis die Gelehrten es im Jahr 1982 „verlangt“ haben und argumentieren, dass die Rendering von Raum, Textur und Anatomie eine geschickte Nachahmung eines unbekannten Künstlers nahelegt. In Ermangelung von Unterlagen oder schlüssigen Beweisen aus der technischen Analyse geht die Aussprache fort.
