Biografia:
, an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer, was born on October 4, 1861, in Canton, New York. His family, of French Basque ancestry, had a strong influence on his early life. Remington's father, Colonel Seth Pierrepont Remington, was a hardware store owner and a colonel in the American Civil War. This exposure to the military and the Wild West would later shape Remington's artistic style. Remington attended Vermont Episcopal Institute, a church-run military school, where he began to develop his drawing skills. He then transferred to another military school, but his lack of focus and laziness led him to pursue a career in art instead of the military.
Remington's first published illustration was a cartoon of a "bandaged football player" for the Yale Courant, the student newspaper at Yale University, where he attended art school. He found that action drawing and depicting scenes from the American West fascinated him more than traditional art training. In 1881, Remington made his first trip to Montana, which marked the beginning of his authentic view of the Western United States. This experience influenced his subsequent artwork, featuring cowboys, American Indians, and the U.S. Cavalry.
Frederic Remington's contributions to Western American art are undeniable. His work has been a source of inspiration for many artists, including N. C. Wyeth and Zane Grey. The Frederic Remington Art Museum, with its extensive collection of his original paintings, sketches, and sculptures, serves as a testament to his enduring influence.
