Der Papagei entstand in der nur kurzzeitig (1755-1767) bestehenden Muschel- und Korallenmanufaktur von Johann Michael van Selow in Braunschweig. Die Vogelskulptur, von der sich noch ein zweites Exemplar erhalten hat, stellt mit ihrer Darstellung eines exotischen Vogels in der ungewöhnlichen Technik des Perlenmosaiks ein geradezu ideales Kunstkammerobjekt dar. Als solches gelangte es wohl unter Herzog Carl I. von Braunschweig-Lüneburg in das 1754 als öffentliches Museum eingerichtete Kunst- und Naturalienkabinett in Braunschweig.
