William Morris ‘Bird and Vine’ fabric was woven at Merton Abbey using hand-operated jacquard looms. These looms partly automated the weaving process using a system of punched cards to automatically lift the correct threads. Although Morris preferred to create products using traditional craft skills, he accepted the need to use machinery to supply affordable and practical objects. This woven fabric is one of several designs by Morris from this period that includes birds.
