This exquisite vase decorated with graceful poppies was made by the Rookwood Pottery Company. Founded by Maria Longworth Nichols in Cincinnati, Rookwood employed academy-trained artists and potters to produce hand-thrown, hand-painted earthenware. Rookwood’s wares typically show a strong Japanese influence with an earthy palette of browns, oranges, and greens, as shown here. Floral and other natural motifs were popular with collectors. It is not known where or when the Fricks acquired the vase, which is one of four Rookwood pieces in Clayton.
