Munch, viewing his paintings as his children, was reluctant to let go of any of them for sale. He thus made reproductions of the original in many mixed mediums. Such was the case with The Scream, of which there are many reproductions. This painting is Munch’s masterpiece, and one of the most recognizable pieces of art in the world. According to Munch, he was inspired to paint this scene as he was walking in a boardwalk with tow of his companions. As he stopped and his companions walked on, he looked up at the blood red sky and felt a “the scream of nature” moving through him. This painting’s legacy includes a number of artistic works, mentions in books, movies, television shows, and advertising campaigns.
