DJ/BA00768. There is some doubt about the date of birth of Sebastían Martínez; while Palomino situates it in 1602, Rafael Cañada believes he was born in 1619. According to Palomino, after the death of Velázquez, Sebastián Martínez went to Madrid and Philip IV appointed him court painter. In addition to Jaén, before going to Madrid, he carried out a large part of his work in Córdoba and Lucena, where several of his works are preserved. With regard to his style, there are elements reminiscent of Alonso Cano and Rubens. The works he carried out in later life emerged in an atmosphere in which forms are usually interwoven in a studied space with aerial perspectives highlighting the part which interested the painter, by means of the chiaroscuro illusion.
