Painter Ulysse Butin (1838-1883) liked to depict the daily lives of fishermen and seasides. In this painting, he describes the procession of an ex-voto, a subject offered up in a sacred place as thanks for a divine intervention. In the lower half of the horizontal painting, several groups are seen heading to the church. Placed on a promenade, the scene overlooks the gray sea in the background. At the center, three elements form a significant triangle: the small sailboat (votive object) directed by a woman; her husband, who follows her and holds their youngest child; and the crucifix, which dominates them. It denotes the determining role of divinity on journeys at sea.The three men thank God for having kept them alive during a storm at sea, to which the gray, cloudy sky still bears testament.
