Moritz von Sachsen war ein illegitimer Sohn Friedrich Augusts I. von Sachsen, genanntAugust der Starke, und Maria Aurora von Könickmark. Schon sehr früh studierte er Musik und Philosophie in Halle, schlug aber dann eine militärische Laufbahn ein und kämpfte 1709 in Flandern unter Prinz Eugen und Malborough. 1720 trat er in den französischen Militärdienst ein.
