Tijdens zijn korte leven heeft Jan Mankes (1889-1920) zichzelf keer vastgelegd, waardoor we hem door de jaren heen licht zien verouderen. In de periode waarin hij in Friesland woonde, heeft hij zichzelf minstens acht of negen keer getekend of geschilderd en zonder uitzondering beeldt hij zichzelf af als een ernstige, verstilde jongeman. De donkere kleuren, het contrast tussen de bleek-groene gelaatskleur en de scherpe lijnen van kaak, jukbeen en neus maken dit portret op 22- of 23-jarige leeftijd tot een van meest indringendste uit zijn tijd in De Knipe. Vanaf 1909-1915 woonde hij daar met zijn ouders, omdat zijn vader na zijn pensionering terug naar zijn heitelân, naar zijn geboortestreek wilde. Voor Jan Mankes was deze landelijke omgeving een vooruitgang en veel van zijn meest geliefde werk komt hier tot stand: de portretten van zijn ouders, het huis, de dieren en de directe omgeving.
