К 1635 году Питер Штуйвесант, уроженец западного Фрисленда, Нидерланды, был занят голландской West India Co. и отправлен в Бразилию. В 1643 году он был назначен губернатором Curaçao и других голландских островов Вест-Индии; во время экспедиции против португальцев на Сент-Мартине в 1644 году его правая нога была ранена, требуя ампутации. В 1646 году он был назначен генеральным директором New Netherland; он служил в этом офисе, пока колония не попала под британское правление в 1664 году.
