Тема рисунков основана на Книге Бытия (21:14–19). Хагар и сын ее, Ишмаил, были отосланы Авраамом и бесцельно бродили по пустыне Вирсава. Они были в опасности умереть от жажды, но Бог услышал, как мальчишки плачут и послал ангела, чтобы показать им путь к колодцу. Как можно распознать в несколько мелодраматическом мовименто фигур и в грубом строительстве переднего двора, с его короткими, сломанными щетками и щетинами, берлинский рисунок не относится к периоду художников –, как предложил Дрейер –, а скорее к его позднему периоду.
