Людовик XV преуспел на троне Франции в 1715 году после смерти своего прадеда Людовика XIV, который царствовал более семидесяти лет. Пятилетний мальчик был единственным выжившим сыном Луиса, герцога де Бургогна, и Марии Адélaïde de Savoie, оба из которых умерли от оспы в 1712 году.
