Мандла, до середины 18-го века, был центром королевства Гарха-Мандла ( династия Раджпут-Гонд) и находится далеко к востоку от общего театра войны. Город и его великий форт лежали хорошо защищенными на резком изгибе вдоль реки Нармада. В апреле 1818 года британское рвение к захвату Мандлы было мотивировано тем, что за месяц до этого форты палара пытались (хотя и безуспешно) убить британского офицера, который путешествовал под флагом перемирия. Британцы прибыли в Мандлу 18 апреля 1818 года и с большим трудом построили осадные батареи через реку, стоящую перед фортом. К 26 апреля они сильно повредили стены форта, прежде чем нарастить то, что оказалось беспорядочным штурмовым налетом на бастион, во время которого 500 защитников были убиты. Мандла быстро сдался после этого.
