Когда Пол Гоген учил себя живописи в 1874 году, у него уже была довольно разнообразная жизнь. Родился в Париже и вырос в Перу, впервые работал моряком и бизнесменом. Как брокер для парижского банка (до 1883) Гоген наконец достиг уважения и богатства. Приглашенный Камиллой Писарро и Эдгаром Дегасом, Гоген впервые принял участие в выставке импрессионистов в 1880 году. Затем он бросил свою работу, сначала прожив в Руане и Копенгагене, прежде чем вернуться в Париж на короткое время. Оттуда он ушел в 1886 году, чтобы жить в Понт-Авене, к которому он вернулся после посещения Мартиника в 1888 году. Картина собирателей Бретона Кельпа была сделана в то время, когда он покинул агитацию художников Бретона.
