Диез, который был студентом Schönberg’s, написал в письме, что это был один из двух портретов, которые Герстл написал о нем в 1906 году, почти наверняка после того, как Диез вернулся той осенью с летнего размещения в Риме. Диз утверждает, что портрет изначально предназначался для комиссии, организованной Schönberg, который, по-видимому, решил помочь Герстлу получить работу среди его круга.
