In the 1920s Diego Rivera began to depict calla lilies in his paintings, often associated with phallic symbolism. Over time the calla lily became a constant motif in his work, beloved by both the public and collectors, who often commissioned portraits of themselves or their families including these flowers. The female presence is associated to flowers, whatever the social or economic position of women. The relation is always the same: the sensuality and eroticism associated to them.
