The artist and composer Hans Peter Kuhn started his professional career at Schaubühne am Halleschen Ufer in Berlin as a sound engineer. After Kuhn left Schaubühne in 1979, he concentrated more and more on his own artistic productions and since then, has created a huge body of work, including sound installations, light installations, videos, film music, and sound designs for theatre and dance performances. His practice involves minimalist light and sound installations which always refer to the conditions of the institutional and public spaces where they are created. The artistic considerations given to their placement, the reflections of light and colour, and the interplay of light and shadow serve to accentuate the given architecture. In contrast to traditional three-dimensional forms and sculptures which are modelled by exterior light, in Kuhn’s works, light penetrates from inside to outside. These sound and light performances explore the possibilities of experiencing and perceiving from a distance.
