キスリングはポーランドに生まれた。同地の美術アカデミーで３年間学んだ後、1910年にパリのモンマルトルに移住、セザンヌ、ピカソ、ブラックらによるキュービズムの影響を受けた。陽気で社交好きで比較的金回りの良かったキスリングは、「モンパルナスの王様」と呼ばれた。第二次世界大戦中はアメリカに渡って美術学校で教える。1946年にフランスに戻り、1951年に個展を開いて成功を収めた。彼は妖艶な花や女性を多く描いた。中でもミモザの花は彼のお気に入りのテーマの一つである。 本作品の豊穣な穀物の実りを連想させる量感のある黄色いミモザの花と暗緑色の背景との対比は、象徴的で強烈な印象を与える。キスリング珠玉の一点といえよう。
