Chenxian was a Chinese painter, who is thought to be representative of the early painters around “Obaku-shu”, a religious sect of Zen in the middle 17th century. He did not visit Japan during his life, but many of his works were brought by Chinese monks who went to Japan. The strong and unusual style of Chenxian’s ink painting gave serious impacts to Japanese painters in Nagasaki. This painting had been inherited in Seifukuji temple established in 1677.
