Dave Muller is a conceptual artist who frequently uses music as a way to examine cultural identity and social history. Cats and Dogs painstakingly reproduces three different vinyl record albums (45 singles), enlarged and set inside one another: Prince’s “Purple Rain” (1984), Guns N’ Roses’ “November Rain” (1991), and The Beatles’ “Rain” (1966). Muller painted each record label with great detail, including sales stickers and the wear and tear from years of handling that read as markers of use and affection. The theme of rain, together with the records’ concentric placement, binds the singles together by emphasizing their shape as well as their appeal across musical genres, decades, and cultures.
