Caravaggio’s impact on Neapolitan painting is evident in this still life that overflows with fresh and dried fruit and nuts that come together to suggest the season of autumn. Giuseppe Ruoppolo, whose still lifes were praised as "truth more beautiful than nature itself," was the pupil of his uncle, Giovanni Battista Ruoppolo, whose works exhibit a similar grittiness distinct from the smoother planes and forms favored by their northern Italian counterparts.
