The Leeuwarden Series: Adversaries of the Republic Francisco Hurtado de Mendoza was a muchfeared general in the army of Archduke Albert of Austria. He was captured by the Dutch at the Battle of Nieuwpoort on 2 July 1600 and held prisoner until 24 May 1602. What has been taken as Van Ravesteyn’s signature in past Rijksmuseum catalogues43 can be better described as an inscription, and rather than being a work by Van Ravesteyn himself, this painting should be assigned to his workshop. The prototype is likely to have been another portrait in the collection of the Rijksmuseum showing Mendoza at three-quarter length (SK-A-3912). This work by an anonymous artist is inscribed with the date 1601.44 Jonathan Bikker, 2007 See Bibliography and Rijksmuseum painting catalogues See Key to abbreviations and Acknowledgements This entry was published in J. Bikker (ed.), Dutch Paintings of the Seventeenth Century in the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, I: Artists Born between 1570 and 1600, coll. cat. Amsterdam 2007, no. 391.
