The Leeuwarden Series: Members of the House of Nassau Justinus was the bastard son of William the Silent and Eva Elincx, the daughter of an Emmerich burgomaster. In 1576, he began his studies at Leiden University, where he attended the lectures of Justus Lipsius. His military career began in 1583 when he became an officer in the States army. Shortly thereafter he was made commander-in-chief of the Zeeland fleet. In the capacity of lieutenant-admiral, his last military engagement was an operation near Sluis in 1600, for which he was awarded a gold chain by the States of Zeeland. The following year he was appointed governor of Breda, a position he held until the Spanish capture of the town in 1625.43 A larger version of this portrait in Belfast is also attributed to Van Ravesteyn.44 The Belfast portrait is, perhaps, the prototype for the Rijksmuseum painting, or both works are replicas of a lost original. Judging by the lace collar, the prototype was probably executed between about 1605 and 1615.
