The stone stele from which this rubbing was made was erected in memory of Li Sixun (651–716, or 648–713), a painter of the early Tang. Li, a native from Qin’an, Gansu province, was the son of Li Xiaobin, a member of the Tang imperial clan. Also known as a military leader, he was conferred the title of Grand General of Wuwei. The stele was inscribed in the 6th month, 8th year of the Kaiyuan reign (720) during the early reign of the Xuanzong emperor (r. 712–755). Written in semi-cursive script, the text of the stele is arranged in 30 rows, each with 70 characters. The stele inscription compiled and copied by Li Yong, tells us the family, deeds and official career of Li Sixun. The stele was originally installed in Pucheng, Shaanxi province. The calligrapher and author of this stele, Li Yong (678–747) was a native of Jiangdu (present-day Yangzhou). At one time he was Director of Beihai, hence, he has been referred by historians of calligraphy as Li Beihei. Li first followed closely the calligraphy styles of the two Wangs (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi) but he later developed and evolved his own characteristic as seen in the present rubbing album. The composition of the individual characters may be off-balanced at first glance and the lines are sharp and straightforward. But the overall effect is unpretentious, harmonious and fluent. His influence carried well into the Song and later dynasties. This album of rubbings was probably made in the 12th to 13th century during the Song/ jin period. Technically the ink rubbing process was very skillfully done with good quality ink and paper, but as the lower portion of the original stele was damaged at the time, hence quite a number of characters are missing or with broken strokes. Some later retouching with ink on these broken areas had been performed and the missing title and inscription were substituted by a 16th century rubbing. The piece has been well published and had been in the hand of prominent collectors of rubbings from the early 19th century. Appended to the album are quite a good number of colophons and inscriptions by scholars and connoisseurs. In 2016, the piece was listed in the “National Catalogue of Precious Ancient Books”.
