Carmen Aldunate was the youngest of four children born to an upper-class Chilean family in 1940. Alhough the family belonged to a privileged social class, they faced traumatic illness and suicide, the pain of which inflects the subjects of Aldunate’s art. Aldunate was raised by strong female figures including her grandmother, the first female mayor of Santiago, and she portrayed women frequently in her work. She studied painting at home and later at Catholic University (Santiago) and at the Art School of the University of California, following her move to the United States.Text credit: Produced in collaboration with the University of Maryland Department of Art History & Archaeology and by M.
