The grand and imposing chapter throne used by senior church dignitaries is normally high-backed with arms, and was given a prominent place in the church. The characteristic features of this chair, painted in dark shiny brown, with decorations outlined in gold, lie in the type of carved designs distributed over the back, seat and cabriole legs that end in curled feet.Although the chair’s structure has some features characteristic of the early 1700’s, the moulding on the back, the scrolls of acanthus surmounted by polylobate pinnacles, the frame that on both back and seat was designed to accommodate removable cushions, and the aforementioned legs all show decorative traits reflecting the taste for rocaille. Such include the festoons hanging from the central motif (a shell design that looks more like a knot) and, above all, the rather unusual treatment, perhaps locally inspired, of the carved flowers and foliage that ornament the top of the back of this Episcopal throne.
