This portrait is of Sir John Hay, the fifth Baronet of Haystone, sometimes listed in the older spelling of Haystoun, (1755-1830). The Haystone Baronetcy was created by Charles I in 1635 as part of the royal policy of securing allies in Scotland. Sir John inherited the title in 1810 upon the death of his father, who also sat for Raeburn (portrait presently un-located). This portrait is a fine example of Raeburn
