Archangels are one of the nine choirs of angels listed in the Bible. The names of three Archangels have been mentioned in the Holy Bible, they are: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. All three have specific roles.St Michael the Archangel is known as the ‘Prince of Heavenly Host’ and is regarded as the leader of all angels. St Michael is invoked by the faithful to help them in their fight against Satan. He is the guardian of all mountain places. He is also the special Guardian Angel of the Pope. He is usually pictured as a strong warrior, dressed in armour (lance and shield) and wearing sandals, piercing a dragon (devil) as can be seen in this ivory image.
