Anthony Elmer Crowell (1862-1952) ha vissuto tutta la sua vita a East Harwich, Massachusetts, a Cape Cod, dove ha preso un interesse precoce per la caccia e gli uccelli. Incise il suo primo decoy intorno all'età di dieci anni, e suo padre gli diede un fucile per il suo dodicesimo compleanno. L'autunno successivo costruì un cieco su un laghetto vicino e uccise novantasette anatre nere che la prima stagione. Verso il 1908 fu intaglio di decoys in quantità, e entro un decennio ampliò il suo lavoro per includere non solo decoy funzionali, ma canzoni in miniatura e corvi che erano opere d'arte eccezionali.
