Ce portrait posthume idéalisé dépeint Johann Joachim Winckelmann, qui est crédité de la réévaluation de l'art grec antique grâce à son travail d'archéologue et pionnier de l'histoire de l'art. Son histoire de l'art ancien, publié en 1764, est devenu un socle de pensée néoclassique sur le corps idéalisé européen ainsi qu'une référence clé pour les voyageurs. Dans son portrait, Winckelmann tient une édition grecque d'Homère Iliad, une allusion à sa connaissance de la poésie classique. Le portraitiste, Mengs, était un ami de Winkelmann, souvent homoérotiquement chargé de cercle social à Rome, mais il travaillait dans toute l'Europe.
