Este instrumento se utilizó para calcular distancias y alturas inaccesibles, medir ángulos horizontales, dibujar gráficos o mapas topográficos, y hacer cálculos trigonométricos. Tiene un semicírculo calibrado de 0 a 130 grados con un centro de corte. Un alidade gira alrededor de un pequeño círculo de corte. La base está bordeada por un gobernante graduado utilizado para marcar minutos en el borde y observar los ángulos desde mediciones topográficas. Para crear gráficos, se utilizó en un tablero de aproximadamente un metro cuadrado, apoyado en un trípode, sobre el cual se puso el papel que debía dibujarse.
