Kurz nachdem es um 1877 abgeschlossen war, gab Degas dieses Bild Alexis Rouart und seiner Frau. Rouart war ein alter Freund und ehemaliger Schulkamerad, aber Degas war noch näher an seinem Bruder Henri, ein Amateur Maler, dessen beeindruckende Sammlung von Werken von Degas die großen Tänzer Practicing in der Bar (29.100.34). Dancer Onstage später ging an Alexis Sohn Henri.
