Während der formativen Jahre, die Degas in Italien, 1856 bis 1859 arbeitete, machte er Kopien nach alten Meistern sowie Studien von Männern und Frauen im lokalen Kostüm, beide Themen populär unter der Gemeinde der französischen Künstler, die nach Rom flocked. Dieses Gemälde kombiniert einen figuralen Stil und eine Palette, die an Poussin erinnert, mit einem Auge für realistisches Detail, die in der Rendering der gezackten Haut und gezackten Händen der Frau sichtbar ist. Monumental und unvorstellbar, vermeidet das Bild die malerische Sentimentalität, die vielen zeitgenössischen Bildern von Bauern und Bettlern gemeinsam ist.
