Alrededor de 1870, Smith & Wesson lanzó un revólver con un nuevo sistema de carga y descarga con un cilindro y un cañón de desplazamiento. Desde entonces, cada revólver usando ese sistema era conocido como “Smith”. Habiendo abandonado el plan inicial para fabricar su propio arma reglamentaria, una Orden Real de fecha 6 de octubre de 1884 declaró que el uso del revólver seguiría siendo obligatorio para los comandantes y oficiales tanto en el Ejército como en la Guardia Civil. Sin embargo, se eligió un modelo específico: el 11 mm (0.43 )
