Im Jahr 1746 kam Canaletto nach England und im folgenden Jahrzehnt produzierte eine reiche Rekord von Mid-Georgian London. In dieser aufwändig abgeschlossenen Arbeit, gezeichnet als Sammlerstück, wird die Stadt London von oben auf der Terrasse des alten Somerset House gesehen, entworfen von Inigo Jones in den 1630er Jahren. Treppen führen zu den Themsen, die mit dem Flussverkehr drosseln. In der Ferne steht die alte Londoner Brücke, während die St. Paul's Kathedrale über einer Skyline mit Kirchengeistern thront.
