Der Rechtswissenschaftler Bartolomeo Bonghi wurde in seinen Professuren und dreieckigen Hut gekleidet und hält 1553 ein Buch über das römische Zivilrecht, das ihm von seinem Autor gewidmet ist. Durch das offene Fenster ist ein Turm, der eine der identifizierbaren Wahrzeichen von Bergamo war. Moroni wurde in ganz Norditalien für seine Fähigkeit bewundert, seine Sitten "aus dem Leben" oder "aus der Natur" in den Worten des venezianischen Künstlers Titian zu erfassen. Solche Arbeiten wurden zweifellos von der jungen Caravaggio untersucht.
