In diesem Werk ließ Courbet die Trappings einer akademischen Allegorie oder tatsächlich eines Bildes mit einem hochgeprägten Vorwand fallen. Sein Bild einer Frau, die eine Wasserkaskade umgibt, kann eine Antwort auf eine Arbeit von Ingres im Vorjahr in Paris gewesen sein, die eine hyper-idealisierte Nude darstellt, die ein Glas hält, aus dem Wasser als Allusion zum Frühling oder als Flussquelle gießt.
