Inman bemalte Porträts von Native Americans in Vorbereitung auf die Produktion von handfarbigen Lithographien für Thomas L. McKenneys "Die Geschichte der indischen Stämme Nordamerikas" (1836–44). Diese Führer wurden ursprünglich von Charles Bird King aus dem Leben gemalt, als sie 1822 von der US-Regierung nach Washington eingeladen und von Präsident James Monroe begrüßt wurden. Kings Porträts wurden 1865 in einem Feuer an der Smithsonian Institution zerstört, während Inmans Serie in großen Städten von New York nach London gezeigt wurde. Pes-Ke-Le-Cha-Co, Chef der Pawnees, die eine markante Silber-Friedensmedaille trägt, wird als starker Führer präsentiert, der damals als "ein fester, entschlossener Mann, ein Experte Jäger und furchtloser Krieger gefeiert wird.
