El escritor Théophile Thoré repitió su crítica habitual de Corot en 1865, fecha de esta imagen: "Corot casi nunca hizo nada además del mismo paisaje, pero es bueno". El paisaje aquí fue concebido por Corot en su estudio a partir de elementos de stock que conocía de corazón: el racimo de árboles plateados, el cuerpo de agua de plomo, las figuras campesinas y el marinero, la torre lejana. Como su ídolo Claude Lorrain, Corot podría generar un paisaje y un estado de ánimo a través del poder de su imaginación.
