En 1868, l'artiste est chargé par son patron, Félix Hartmann, de peindre une série représentant les quatre saisons. Le printemps du Musée d'Orsay, a été le premier de la série, l'été (Buckwheat Harvest) est à Boston, l'automne (Haystacks) à New York, et l'hiver à Philadelphie.
