La très grande église de la Santa Maria Novella a été la première église importante et indépendante de style vraiment italien. Sa construction a commencé vers 1246 pour l'Ordre dominicain. Les dates exactes des différentes parties de l'église sont toujours controversées, mais il a certainement fallu très longtemps pour la construire. La nef n'a commencé qu'en 1279, et la façade, commencée en 1310, n'a été terminée qu'en 1470. Néanmoins, l'intérieur et le plan en font l'église la plus importante de sa date.
