A diferencia de muchos de sus ambiciosos contemporáneos, Rembrandt nunca viajó a Italia. Sin embargo, el arte italiano tuvo un efecto profundo en él. En esta representación de la diosa romana de primavera, respondió al maestro veneciano del siglo XVI Titian en particular. Sin embargo, la coloración sombría y el manejo de pintura ruda hacen de este trabajo inequívocamente propio de Rembrandt, y la diosa puede estar basada en parte en un retrato de su difunta esposa, Saskia, que había sido la inspiración para muchas de sus pinturas.
