Il pittore di storia leader John Trumbull introdusse il mecenate d'arte Daniel Wadsworth (1771-1848) agli artisti emergenti del giorno, tra cui Thomas Sully, che Wadsworth invitò a dipingere questo ritratto. Il lettino dona guanti in pelle buff con cuciture rosse, caratteristica di quelli indossati durante il viaggio. Wadsworth era un viaggiatore romantico e artista dilettante a suo diritto, che ha cercato belle scene a schizzo. Successivamente Wadsworth fondò il Wadsworth Atheneum, che aprì nel 1844, e lasciò la maggior parte delle opere più importanti della sua collezione. Sully doveva diventare il pittore più importante di Philadelphia.
