Wu Changshuo creò uno stile distintivo che fondeva l'approccio epigrafico classico alla pittura con lo stile popolare di Ren Yi (1840-1895) e continuò i literati ideali per unire poesia, calligrafia e pittura in un'unica opera d'arte. L'immagine di Wu di uno studioso seduto accanto a un qin (zither) assaporando il tè appena preparato celebra gli ideali literati senza tempo di raffinatezza, ritiro e auto-culturazione. Wu scelse un tema tradizionale e una spazzola calligrafica sfocata quando molti artisti si rivolgevano all'Occidente per materia e stile, riflettendo la sua convinzione nella tradizione cinese come una risorsa duratura per l'artista moderno. Il poema di Wu legge:Watching l'acqua di sorgente bollente,Sitting accanto al bordo stony del lago, i pini vecchi assomigliano a saghi antichi, Un qin si trova da un uomo del passato.
