Edward Corbett was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1919. His father was an Army cavalry officer, so he spent his first nine years in El Paso, Texas, and then lived in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and the Philippines. He attended the California School of Fine Arts (CSFA) and eventually enrolled at the University of California, Berkeley, where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1941. During World War II, Corbett served in the United States Army, and after the war, he returned to Berkeley to study art history. In 1949, he received his Master of Arts degree. Corbett began teaching art in 1950, and in 1952, he became a professor at the San Francisco Art Institute. He continued to teach there until his death in 1971. Corbett's work is characterized by its abstract expressionist style and its exploration of color and form. He was influenced by the work of Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and Barnett Newman, among others. Corbett's paintings are held in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
