Hart Hyatt North was born in Marysville, California on July 12, 1871. He was the son of George North, a hardware merchant in Marysville and later a fruit farmer in Winters, California. In 1886, Hart Hyatt North moved to Alameda County and became the first Immigration Commissioner on Angel Island. He was a savvy professional with a strong gender consciousness who actively sought success and shaped his own destiny. He was also a photographer and donated a collection of photographs to UC Berkeley, which includes photographs of the interior of the United States Immigration Station on Angel Island. Hart Hyatt North died in 1950.
